City of Jonesboro
Regular Meeting
September 9, 2002
The regular meeting of the Jonesboro Mayor and Council was held September 9,
2002.
Members present were as follows: Ed Adair, Rick Yonce, Yvette McDonald, Luther
Maddox
and Wallace Norrington. Mayor Joy Day was absent, Mayor Pro-Tern, Clifford
Sewell presided.
The minutes of the August meeting were read. Councilman Maddox made a motion to
approve
the minutes as read, Councilman Norrington seconded. The motion carried
unanimously.
Mayor Pro-Tern Sewell called for Rodney Johnson, who was on the agenda, to
address the
council. Rodney Johnson was not present. Councilman Maddox made a motion to
delete Mr.
Johnson from the current agenda as he was not present. Councilwoman McDonald
seconded.
The motion carried unanimously.
After reviewing the extension of the adult entertainment moratorium, Councilman
Maddox made
a motion to extend the current adult entertainment moratorium as written. (Copy
attached)
Councilwoman McDonald seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
Under other news Fire Chief Jimmy Wiggins updated the council on a Henry County
Mutual Aid
on a barn fire. In addition, October 5 will be Sensational Saturday at the
beach; which will be in
conjunction with Red Ribbon Week. The Jonesboro Fire Department will take part
in several
ceremonies in memorial services for 9-11.
Police Chief Harris updated the council on the monthly reports and made them
aware that he is
looking into a program that will allow payments to be made on-line. Code
Enforcement Officer
Rowland requested the council to update ordinance to help with enforcing the
codes. Councilman Maddox asked the status of his cases. Officer Rowland
explained four cases have been to court and three are pending.
Mayor Pro-Tern Sewell voiced concern about the standing water around the city,
specifically the
potholes on the street adjoining West Building Material and Wendy’s Restaurant.
Public Works
Director, James Massengale explained that was on private property. Mayor
Pro-Tern Sewell
suggested the owner be called to possibly put some crush run or gravel in the
holes until the
street is paved. Discussion was held on the type of mosquito spray and how often
we spray.
In other business, Mayor Pro-Tern Sewell has been in touch with Stan Kemp
regarding the
fencing at the Methodist Church. This will be taken care of Assist. City Clerk,
Joan Jones,
requested council to have letter written for reimbursement of retirement back
pay for former
council member Louie Davis. This was so authorized.
There being no further business, Councilman Maddox made a motion to adjourn the
meeting. Councilman Adair seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
