Regular Meeting
March 13th, 2000
The regular meeting of Mayor and Council was held March 13, 2000 with Mayor Day and the following members present: T. E. Adair, Luther Maddox, Yvette McDonald, Wallace Norrington and Clifford Sewell.
Mayor Day on behalf of the City and friends, expressed sorrow upon the death of Councilman Shirley Wynn. A moment of silence was observed in his memory.
The minutes of the February meeting were read and stand approved on a motion by Sewell, seconded by
Norrington.
McDonald moved, seconded by Norrington, that the agenda be amended to include the election of Mayor Pro Tem. The motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Day reported that she met with County Commission Chairman, Crandle Bray and that Jodeco Road will be a "No Truck Route".
There was no Official Call for an election to fill the unexpired term of Councilman Wynn, but the City Clerk announced that it is to be held July 18th according to the official election code. Mayor Day commented that the Official Call and the setting of the candidate qualifying dates are to be on the April agenda.
Mayor Day requested suggestions from the Council concerning the adoption of a Taxicab Ordinance for the City. Suggestions were to limit the number of companies and number of vehicles.
Mayor Day opened the floor for nominations for Mayor Pro Tem. Norrington nominated Cliford Sewell; there was a second from McDonald. There were no further nominations. For the nomination were Luther Maddox, Wallace
Norrington, Yvette McDonald and T. E. Adair. Sewell abstained. Sewell was elected Mayor Pro Tem.
On a motion by Maddox, seconded by Norrington, the Fire Department was authorized to
purchase a ventilation fan, 800 ft. of hose and a ventilation saw at the approximate cost of $4,900 from their current budget. The motion carried unanimously.
James Massengale, Director of Public Works, reported that the cost of dumping at the Landfill was running approximately $2,900 per month. Also, he reported that the approximate cost of repairing the fire damage at City Hall will be $6,250 and approximately $1,500 for the security system.
Mayor Day suggested that there be a budget adjustment to cover the cost of re-wiring the City Hall and that it be on the agenda in April.
Tim Moses, 1181 Tanglewood Drive, questioned the Council concerning sprinkler systems for commercial buildings. He was advised that the information that
he had already received from Clayton County should be accurate.
Councilman Sewell expressed his concern over dogs running loose specifically on North Avenue and suggested that the pecan trees at City Hall be trimmed. He has been contacted by a volunteer concerning the trimming of the Crepe Myrtle trees on the railroad right-of-way.
Councilman Norrington called attention to limbs in the cemetery and a fence that has been damaged from their falling.
There being no further business, Adair moved, seconed by Norrington that the meeting be adjourned.
