Primary Responsibilities

The City Council determines the policies of the city and enacts local laws necessary to implement those policies and protect public health, safety, and welfare. The Council takes the lead in identifying community needs and developing programs to meet those needs. The Council constantly reviews the delivery of city services and is responsible for adoption of an annual budget and the levying of taxes necessary to finance local government operations.

Mayor Joy Day

     Mayor Joy Brantley Day was elected by the citizens for a four year term in November 1995. Mayor Day was born in Thomaston, Georgia, on February 26, 1948. Mayor Day graduated from Yateseville High School in 1966. She attended Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors  in 1969. One of her early teaching jobs was in West Germany teaching third grade for two years. Mayor Day came to Clayton County in 1971, where she began teaching third grade at Lee Street Elementary in Jonesboro. She spent most of her career teaching sixth grade, and also served as Instructional Lead Teacher. Mayor Day was Assistant Principal at Lee Street for five years. She is now the Principal at Suder Elementary. She earned a Master's Degree(M.Ed.) and Specialist Degree (Ed.S) from Georgia State University in Atlanta Georgia. Her graduate degrees are in Curriculum & Instruction, Instructional Supervision, and Administration & Supervision.
     Mayor Day is especially interested in keeping the small town flavor of Jonesboro by being responsive to citizens' needs and wishes. Since being elected, Mayor Day has been instrumental in refurbishing the new City Hall and the new Police Department building. The city has purchased a new street sweeping machine to help keep Jonesboro cleaner. Mayor Day also has an interest in beautifying the city; many beautification projects have been undertaken during her term such as new hanging baskets for the city, planting additional flowers, enforcing city code on unkempt locations and overgrown lots, and replacing faded and worn out signs. The city charter has also been revised and rewritten.
     Mayor Day is very active in community and civic affairs. She is a member of the Jonesboro Woman's Club, Tara Kiwanis, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Kappa, Clayton County Department of Elementary School Principals, Rainbow House Advisory Council, Clayton County Humane Society, and many others.
